Carlisle is the compassionate adoptive father of all the Cullens. He turned all of them-including Esme (but not Bella)-into vampires when there was no other option but to die except for Alice and Jasper who were adopted into the family later on. After being turned into a vampire he spent sometime with the Volturi-at the time was just Marcus, Cauis, and Aro- and study medicine. When he was fist turned into a vampire he spent all his time away from any civilization, without blood he was getting weaker, until one day he found deer and couldn’t stop himself. After hunting the deer he saw that he could live civilized and survive only on animal blood. This is why he believed he was brought to the vampire world with compassion, he was one of the few-if not only-vampire to constrain themselves enough to live against human blood.
